In need of a good job (Detailing sucks) and luckly bowling at the same house as Clyde Berg i landed a job at GENE BERG ent. Working in the head department i learned a lot about power. Trying out drag racing at Carlsbad i found a new passion. After removing the passenger seat and bumpers plus fan belt i was able to turn out a best 16.54. Now with a new car to drive to work (a GEO Storm) i could spend more time on my race car. With the help of Clyde on my heads and Mark V with the long block i was able to build my first race motor. With only so much money i was able to squeeze more out of the 1641cc.Changes like a web 118 cam, 1.25 rockers, new lifters, chromoly push rods, dual springs and retainers. With only .415 lift on the stock valves the motor made 103 hp at 6200 rpm (estimated). All this with dual 40mm Kadrons. if you need help with your carbs click here. The car had some changes of its own like 75lbs removed from the inside and other odds and ins. The big day came when we took it to Carlsbad to see what it could do now. 14.92 "WOW" i passed up the 15.00s straight into the 14.00s and man it moved. There was a race the next day at Carlsbad so i put LOW BUGGET to the test. With my first race was up against a nice v8 car and i thought my butt was going to be waxed.I cut a .500 light (.500 is a perfect light with a 5/10's tree). Then a .508 light it seemed like i couldn't lose. Then i pushed it too far with a .498 light. But i still made $75 for the best reaction that day.Now everybody was saying to take it to Bug-O-Rama and see what it could do.So my friend and i headed to Phoenix / Firebird Raceway for Bug-O-Rama #24 to try my luck. |
I was able to win my first ever vw race in LOW BUGGET. Running a best of 14.75 with street tires and the new motor. I felt like the fastest car on the track. For pictures of Phoenix. |
